Classic day trips

Macau · Shenzhen · Lantau · Sai Kung

Hong Kong works well as a base for day sorties. Cross-boundary trips depend on your passport/visa — below is directional only with official pointers, not visa advice.

Macau day trip

Ferries or land crossings link Hong Kong and Macau (routes/piers change — check operators). Budget immigration queue time; same-day returns are tight — go early. Historic centre vs casino strips: pick one focus. Confirm document rules via Macao immigration/tourism official sites.

Shenzhen cross-boundary (brief)

Use official checkpoints such as Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau/Futian, Heung Yuen Wai and others as applicable. Whether you need a Chinese visa, can return same-day, or face goods limits depends on nationality and current rules — check Hong Kong ImmD and mainland border inspection / Chinese visa official channels before you go. Avoid unofficial “agent” crossing offers. This site does not publish a cross-boundary visa list.

Full-day Lantau

Tung Chung → Ngong Ping cable car or bus → Big Buddha / Po Lin → Tai O. See the Lantau page.

Full-day Sai Kung

Sai Kung Town seafood + hired boat to beaches/geopark islands when seas allow. See Sai Kung.

Other full-day options

  • Disneyland or Ocean Park (each needs a full day)
  • Stanley + Repulse Bay southside loop
  • New Territories hike (one trail, do not overstuff)

Timing

Cross-boundary and island days need buffers for queues and last sailings/trains. In typhoon season, check the Observatory before boats or exposed hikes.
